Why do people love Stafford?
Stafford County is known now as a bedroom community for Washington DC and home to many government contractors, but it has been the setting for incredibly important events throughout history. From Pocahontas and Captain John Smith, to George Washington and his famous fabled “chopping of the cherry tree,” to the countless Civil War soldiers’ encampments and hospitals, Stafford has centuries of tales to tell.
During the Civil War, Stafford was a logistical and transportation center, and a staging ground. Chatham Manor was utilized as a Union headquarters and hospital. Among Chatham’s visiting nurses were Walt Whitman and Clara Barton. There are historical sites littered throughout Stafford County, such as Ferry Farm, George Washington’s childhood home and Gari Melchers’ Home and Studio at Belmont.
Nowadays, Stafford is full of recreation opportunities, shops, spas and restaurants! Stafford residents are always just a few minutes’ drive to wineries, theater, museums, golf courses and dozens of parks! Stafford’s popularity is only going to grow and the housing market become even more competitive with the easy access to the VRE, the FBI Academy and Stafford Regional Airport.
