About Downtown Fredericksburg
Steeped in history, Downtown Fredericksburg’s biggest draw is its small-town charm and quirky character. Window boxes overflowing with flowers line the brick sidewalks as families explore the 40-block Historic District with a cup of locally-roasted coffee in hand, occasionally stepping around an artist or musician playing on the sidewalk.
Despite being a vibrant, bustling town with weekly community events, farmer’s markets, and concerts, Downtown Fredericksburg is still easily walkable and family-friendly. Lower Caroline Street is home to grand historic residences and quiet, tree-lined sidewalks, while remnants of industrial buildings can be found on upper Caroline Street. William St and the middle section of Caroline St are still the main business district—home to amazing restaurants, boutiques, and specialty stores. Princess Anne St is the government corridor where you can find City Hall and a Post Office. Hurkamp Park breaks up the shops and restaurants with some lovely greenery and a fountain. For an especially scenic trip, take a drive down Washington Ave over by the University of Mary Washington to see some gorgeous historic homes and the beautiful Kenmore Park.
Just one hour south of Washington, DC and 45 minutes north of Richmond, Fredericksburg is perfectly located in the middle of the DMV. In just an hour’s drive, you could be sightseeing in DC, attending an art exhibition in Richmond or enjoying a nice glass of wine at a Charlottesville vineyard. To make your commute easier, there’s easy access to VRE and Amtrak stations.
Join the ranks of famous Fredericksburg area residents Captain John Smith, George Washington and James Monroe as you work and play in a community that spans three centuries: exploring the natural splendor of the Rappahannock River, visiting our original 18th- and 19th-century buildings and learning about the significance of our area at the Civil and Revolutionary War battlefields within minutes of downtown.
